BACKGROUND TO THE NEW JOB OPPORTUNITIES AT OWLSWICKLooking to the Future For over 25 years Owlswick has been building a reputation for providing children and young people with a fresh start to life and the right environment to help overcome some of their difficulties. For this reason school and home life are integrated in a 'family' atmosphere, where every individual is encouraged to reach their full potential and where being part of a team and working together is encouraged at every opportunity. However, fresh challenges lie ahead and it is recognised that for each child to succeed and make progress as they join Owlswick there needs to be appropriate provision for an increasingly wide range of individual needs. This is therefore one of the key areas in which Owlswick is currently investing for the future very significantly. What this means in practical terms is that we aim to provide each individual with the right support in every aspect of life at Owlswick. At school for example this may mean giving a lot of extra support and encouragement for some who are working towards GCSE examinations. For others, especially the younger pupils, it is the one-to-one classroom support that is provided throughout the school day to help with a wide range of learning situations. Owlswick has always endeavoured to follow the National Curriculum as far as possible, yet in doing so to recognise that for some children progress is going to be slow, and a lot of remedial work will be involved. Therefore the advances need to be measured in small steps, and a highly professional and patient approach is required. On the social side and in home life membership of clubs and local organisations is fully supported and encouraged. Trips to many places of interest and opportunities to meet others and form friendships in the wider community are provided. This is especially important for those coming to Owlswick on a 52 week placement. For others on a 38 week placement there is a dual aspect to managing the learning process. Links with the individual's family are considered important in achieving continuity between life at Owlswick and life at home. To achieve all these things the provision of appropriate levels of help and support to each child is considered of paramount importance; and for those who have made significant progress encouraging steps towards greater independence in life is one of the main targets. In the coming months Owlswick will be welcoming a number of new residents who will be joining the school. To make full provision for this Owlswick is currently recruiting three new members of staff; two to join the Care Team one to join the School Team.
