Owlswick Children’s Home and School has a duty to ensure that Children and Young People are safeguarded and that their welfare is given paramount consideration. In all aspects of our work we strive to provide positive experiences for young people in a safe and caring environment, free from harm or abuse.
Owlswick has a moral and legal obligation to provide a safe living environment within which young people can thrive; where they are cared for by adults they trust and learn to develop positive relationships. Safeguarding covers all areas of our care and education service and all of our staff receive annual safeguarding and child protection training. We also ensure that safeguarding is reflected in all areas of our working practice and operational policies.
Our Safeguarding and Child Protection Policies include our commitment to ensuring young people’s safety when using all forms of technology and we have well developed policies and practice in this constantly evolving area. Our Child Protection Policies are shaped by the Department of Education’s annually revised guidance “ Keeping children safe in education – Statutory guidance for schools and colleges on safeguarding children and safer recruitment.” They are produced by our designated safeguarding leads in conjunction with our senior management team.

Keeping Young People Safe
Keeping young people safe is a fundamental aspect to our work at Owlswick.
All young people have an individual care plan, a safety plan, and a behaviour management plan (including appropriate risk assessments reflecting needs/abilities and levels of understanding), there are regularly reviewed.
Within the education curriculum and through our key working, health and safety conversations with the young people we focus on the following risks and how to keep themselves safe (this is not an exhaustive list):
- Stranger danger
- Road safety
- Misuse of drugs and alcohol
- Sex and relationships
- Sexual violence & harrassment from other children
- Emotional well-being
- Being groomed or sexually exploited
- Staying safe online when using social media
- Getting involved with gangs and gang culture
- Being at risk of radicalisation and extremism
- Running away and not letting people know
Each young person has a personalised risk assessment which is reviewed and updated on an ongoing basis. This assessment considers risks which are pertinent to the young person, and how staff at Owlswick will mitigate against these in order to keep the individual safe. Risk assessments are carried out when assessing all activities internally or outside of Owlswick. Assessments are overseen by our qualified Health and Safety lead.
Owlswick operates safe recruitment practices following the Children’s Homes Regulations and NASS recruitment principles.
All members of staff are subject to an Enhanced DBS check and three references before formally taking up their post.
Staff receive training in Safeguarding and Child Protection, and the teams regularly review safety procedures.
